Lenten Thoughts Day 5

Lenten Memories: (Memories I am making for Lent, smile).
Someone said yesterday they were reminded of “be still”. So today I decided to use “be still”. Thank you, Violet.

We all know this. God told us in His Word to “be still”. That is harder for some of us than others and more difficult at different seasons of life or if we are hit by a sudden (or ongoing) event that is upsetting.

It reminds me of “shalom” which is defined as “Peace”. According to Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance, shalom means “completeness, soundness, welfare, peace.” Another place it is described as, “a Hebrew word meaning peace, harmony, wholeness, completeness, prosperity, welfare and tranquility”.

When I think of being still, I imagine that weaned child at his mother’s breast described in Psalm 131:2 But I have calmed and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with its mother; like a weaned child is my soul within me. (ESV)

Did you know that being still might not need to be sitting in a chair not moving? It might be swinging in a hammock, or a child’s swing at a park, it might be walking by the ocean or our in nature. It could even happen weeding your flower bed if you like to do such a thing. For each of us “being still” and thinking about the goodness and provision of God could look different. But for all of us when we pause our racing mind or hurting heart and do just that we can as Barbara White said, “Remember what we know but are fogetting.”

Cease striving, stop fighting, calm down, be in awe, stop striving, return, Let go of our concerns, let be, desist, BE STILL and KNOW. He is God. He has “it” and He has us. We can REST in His loving provision. No matter what!

For fun I looked up some different translations.
NASB: “Cease striving and know that I am God…”
CSB: “Stop your fighting, and know that I am God…”
CEV: Our God says, “Calm down, and learn that I am God!”
ISV: “Be in awe and know that I am God.”
NET: “Stop your striving and recognize that I am God!”
Aramaic: “Return and know that I AM GOD.”
God’s Word: “Let go [of your concerns]! Then you will know that I am God.”
JPS Tanakh: “Let be, and know that I am God..”
Youngs’s Literal: “Desist, and know that I am God..”Psalm46-10
